Energy Management: Auckland University of Technology

 

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is a leading educational institution in Auckland, New Zealand, that was looking to optimize its energy usage and reduce operational costs. In early 2019, AUT approached Direct Control to implement an energy management solution that included advanced metering and monitoring for the power supply across its campus.

 

The Challenge

As a large university with multiple buildings and facilities, AUT was facing rising energy costs from inefficient power usage. Without visibility into its energy consumption patterns, the university had no way to identify opportunities for savings. The facilities team needed an energy management system that could provide granular measurability and analytics around power consumption.

The Solution

Direct Control conducted an energy audit and installed its automated metering and data analytics platform across AUT’s campus. The system consisted of over 200 smart energy meters connected to a central software dashboard. It provided energy usage data down to the device level and delivered real-time reporting on consumption metrics.

The facilities team could visualize trends, track peak demand times, and pinpoint locations with abnormal usage. The data enabled them to optimize HVAC schedules, adjust operating hours for equipment, identify faulty devices to repair, and prioritize capital projects to improve energy efficiency.

 

The Results

In the first 6 months after implementing Direct Control’s energy management system, AUT reduced its annualized energy consumption by 13% compared to its previous baseline usage. This led to estimated electricity savings of over 172,000 kWh and over $25,000 in cost savings annually.

The project delivered AUT’s objectives of increasing its operational efficiency, cutting energy waste, and reducing utility expenses. With continued use of its new energy analytics capabilities, AUT can build on these savings over time and advance its sustainability initiatives.
